Uses for An Accordion Travel Pouch

I remember feeling so delighted and enchanted the first time I encountered this type of pouch. It was clearly vintage, made of stained satin and tied with a bow, and had at one time held delicate hankies. My maker instincts took over and I had to disassemble it though, like some craft monster intent on dissection in order to discover the beating heart inside.

As I made prototype after prototype, my young daughter snatched them up to fill with trinkets and trash, treasure and snacks and Oreos (I wouldn’t recommend this last one, but the pouches ARE washable if you find yourself in a similar predicament!). It’s so fun to see her instantly recognize how magical this little pouch is, and reminds me that it has so many uses beyond handkerchiefs.

If you’re a stationary lover like me, you’ll find this pouch perfect for small pens, stickers, a little notebook and some wash tape. You could even add a set of stamps, making it a super sweet gift for a long-distance friend. It could even be a portable art kit with a pad, a mini palette, or a handful of crayons.

Other ideas include: a portable sewing kit that fits in any bag. Tuck in a pair of thread snips, a skein of embroidery floss, a bobbin of thread and some thimbles. Then, thread needles through the top layer of the flap, add some scrap fabric, et voila!

I love its original use as a travel pouch. I put jewelry in one compartment and fill the rest up with makeup. Whether you’re making one for yourself, a friend, or a tiny snack-hoarding goblin you love dearly, this pouch is super adaptable and a joy to stitch.
