Before we started filming in New York, I had a chance to make a trip to one of my favorite places in the world, The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
When I lived in New York, I would spend a lot of time roaming this gigantic museum, always finding a new room or hallway stuffed with treasures. During the winter I’d pack up my homework and head to the Egyptian wing, where I’d do my required reading in the main hall (the temple room). It’s huge glass wall allowed me to enjoy the snow outside while I stayed warm with the pharaohs. It really doesn’t get any better for an art history major.
I’ve picked out a few of my favorite pieces from this trip (cameras are still ok in some wings) and included a link to the special exhibition in the costume institute basement. “Impossible Conversations”, a retrospective and comparison of two of the most influential Italian women in fashion, Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada. Watch the short films by Baz Lurhman, where the two women (Schiapparelli, long deceased, is played by Judy Davis) discuss their lives and careers. I loved being that close to that much of their work. Fashion week photo stills don’t do these works of art any justice. A must see!
Hope you can make a trip out soon. Do your homework and choose a few wings you want to visit each day. It’s a lot to take in, but worth every minute!
