Knitting is a relaxing dance of sticks and string that creates beautiful, finished objects. For those who find bliss playing with yarn and needles, I’ve created a list of the top four ways a knitter can practice self-care and nurture themselves through knitting.

1. Create Projects Just for YOU

One of the best parts of knitting is making something that’s totally your style and for you.  Spend some time crafting creative projects like a super cozy blanket in your favorite hues or a chunky cardigan that’s just your style. Look to colors that light you up when you see them. If vibrant reds bring you confidence create a project around that color. Or perhaps subtle hues of light blue and green are more your style, maybe make yourself a special hat or cowl in a luscious yarn you love. These handmade creations are not only a tribute to your creativity but also a way to snuggle up with self-love every time you wear them.

2. Stitch Yourself Present

Knitting can be a way to soothe the mind and stay in the moment. By consciously choosing to focus on each stitch, you can turn your time stitching into a mini meditation session. The texture of the soft yarn as it glides through your fingers, or the soothing sounds of your needles, and watch as your masterpiece takes shape right before your eyes. Do you notice other sounds around you as well? Or have you tried knitting in silence? Seeing if the quiet allows you to concentrate or presents a time where you crave the noise? Being curious as you knit can bring in a new perspective. A mindful approach helps you unwind and leaves you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated, ready to take on the world!

3. Set Aside Time

No matter if you prefer Knitflix or knitting along with your favorite stitching group. Take extra time for your knitting during this month of love. Set aside a few extra minutes each day for you to knit your current project. Listen to your gut and what you need this love filled holiday; maybe solo knitting time is what you need. Or if you’re craving time with your yarn-besties set up a Palentine’s Day knitting gathering.

4. Take Time to Finish

Weaving in ends might not be a favorite activity, but it is something a knitter must do to put the finishing touches on their FO (Finished Object). Sometimes a true act of self-love is tackling the things we are procrastinating. Grab your knitting, tapestry needle, a cup of tea, extra light, and put on a good show or movie. You’ll be surprised how quickly it goes and how good you feel when it’s all done.

Knitting is a fabulous and fun way to practice self-love. By stitching up a project just for you, stitching a meditation, setting aside extra knitting time, and finally weaving in those ends, you can nurture your creativity, mental health, and social connections. Grab those needles and let the yarn fun begin! Your heart and soul will thank you.
