Hey there! I’m Vickie Howell, a multi-hyphenate creative type who you may best know from my patterns partnership with Creativebug. It is officially Fall and unofficially prime knitting & crochet season!

This is the time of year when I can barely contain my maker merriment. You know that classic movie scene when Maria, played by international treasure Julie Andrews, is spinning in circles, arms outstretched joyously towards the hills that are alive with the sound of music? Well, that’s me right now, except the hills are holiday craft supplies, and the sound of music is the feel of impending sweater-weather on my skin. Which brings me to my point. I’m cozied up, ready to create! How about you? Yes? Welp, then I’m pleased as holiday punch to offer CB subscribers SIX more projects to make and give this glorious season.

Have fun; stitch on!

Here Are Some Things I’m Digging for Fall & Holiday Inspiration

Image of a big orange pumpkin knit without needles with big chunky yarn, a real stick for a stem, and black and white striped fabric leaves. A perfect project for Fall.

Reading – I recently finished The Women by Kristin Hannah. Be still my M*A*S*H*-loving heart, this tome is not only my favorite book of the year, but also in my top 3, all-time-favorite historical fiction novels.

Visiting – I recently visited a friend in the Hamptons and got to see the original (albeit highly renovated) Grey Gardens house. I was so excited! If you don’t know about the awesome oddity that is the documentary about the house and its eccentric, mother/daughter inhabitants, get thee to Amazon Prime now! (There’s also a fictionalized version on Max, starring Drew Barrymore & Jessica Lang)

Photo of the Grey Gardens house in the Hamptons, with lots of brown-grey shingles all over the house, striped window coverings, lots of ivy and vine-y plants, against a blue sky.

Making – My latest making achievement was a peacock blue and champagne gold brocade version of the #CamilleSheathDress from the Gertie’s Charmed Studio book. However, since I mentioned sewing the last time I was in your inboxes, this time I’ll show something fun & fiber-y. I’m working on my next book, No Needles Knitting (Quarto, Fall 2025). So much of my yarn-crafting time is dedicated to that. Although I can’t quite share any of those projects, yet, I can show one that is also knit without needles (and with GINORMOUS yarn). Enter, the symbol of the October/November season: the pumpkin! This is my hand knit plush version that only takes a couple of hours to make and is SO SMOOSHY. It’ll live on our sideboard from now through Thanksgiving — I love a multi-holiday make!

Listening – I love a theme, even in my background music. While I craft this month I’m listening to the Sweater Songs Playlist I made on Spotify. Queued-up for the SECOND after T-day has passed is my Making Christmas Playlist. Here’s to sounds to seasonally stitch by!
