Lagniappe: A Little Something Special

Time to get Creole, ya’ll. Our founders Jeanne and Julie both hail from New Orleans, where lagniappe is a way of life — it means a little something extra to sweeten your day, whether that’s at the vegetable market or the beignet counter. Apparently, the word has a circuitous origin. It entered the English vocabulary by way of the Louisiana French, who put their spin on a word brought to New Orleans from the Spanish creoles, who took the word from South America (don’t worry, there won’t be a pop quiz on this one).

Starting this month, we’re bringing that spirit of generosity to Creativebug for our subscribers. Every month, one of our wildly talented instructors will create a little something special for you. Starting with a printable from Christine Schmidt of Yellow Owl Workshop: an original watercolor recipe for a boozy, late-summer popsicle and a set of stamp templates.

Mark Twain wrote in Life on the Mississippi that lagniappe was “a word worth traveling to New Orleans to get.”

We figure that if it’s good enough for Mark Twain, then it’s good enough for all of us.

Enjoy.
