Studio Tour with Rae Hoekstra

You probably know this already, but Rae Hoesktra is a sewing goddess. She’s also the mother of two (soon to be three!), a retired high school physics teacher, and a Sew Mama Sew board member. She’s also funny and smart and pretty, and we want to hang out with her all the time.

If you want to soak up more Rae Hoekstra goodness (and trust us, you do), please scurry on over to her blog, Made by Rae, for enough craft tutorials and inspiration to keep you occupied for the next few years. We’re so smitten with Rae that we asked her to take us on a studio tour and answer a few questions. Luckily, she agreed.

CB: What’s the best part about having your own studio?

Rae: The BEST part about having my own studio is definitely that I can get away from work when I’m at home. There’s no room full of fabric in my house tempting me and drawing me away from my family anymore, and that’s been fantastic for my work-life boundary. I feel like having a studio also makes me more efficient with my work time, since I can get fully into “work mode” without the distractions of my house around me. And of course, I have the ability to have people work with me, so that’s been really fun. My studio assistant Tashina works with me in the studio a few days a week, along with my friend Karen LePage (author of Sewing for Boys, blogs at onegirlcircus.com) who works with me at the studio as well.

CB: Have anything fun planned for the holidays?

Rae: I have all kinds of ideas for holiday sewing…who knows how much of it will actually happen though. I’d love to make an advent calendar for my kids this year; they’re old enough to understand the Christmas-countdown so I think they would find that really exciting and fun. My mom made one for our family when I was little that had cute hand-sewn and embroidered ornaments for every day. We loved it. I would also love to sew cute holiday outfits for them, and it would be great if I could make Mr. Rae a pair of pajama pants for Christmas this year!

CB: What craft project are you most excited about right this moment?

Rae: I’m most excited about sewing baby clothes right now. I have a baby on the way, so cute little pairs of pants, bibs, and burp cloths are all on my list!
