How to Make Fiesta Pom-Pom Flowers

I was walking around Party City on Friday, searching out some paper streamers, when I wandered into an aisle full of multi colored leis. Necklaces of pink swirled with purple and red rustled as I walked past dozens of them. Touching their fuzzy texture, I thought about how fun it would be to make them into puffy little flowers. These festive pom-pom flowers can be made easily and quickly for an instant pop of color. They’re perfect as party decor, a gift topper or just because.

Here are the steps to making your own Fiesta Pom-Pom Flowers:

You will need:

  • Several leis in your color choice. At Party City, you can buy these in a 3 pack for 99 cents. You can also buy slightly fatter leis individually for about 50 cents. Both will work to create your flower.
  • A pair of scissors
  • White wrapped floral wire. You can also use pipe cleaners, or unwrapped floral wire.
  • 1/2″ masking tape if using white floral wire, or floral tape if using green floral wire.

Begin by cutting your lei into 3″ sections. You will need a single 3″ section for each pom-pom flower.

Using a 6″ length of wire, make a little hook at the top of your wire, and place the 3″ bit of lei under the hook.

Twist the tiny tail of wire over the stem to secure the lei in place.

Take the ends of the lei and bring them down to the twisted stem, making a sort of heart shape.

Tape the ends of the lei to the stem by pinching them tightly, while taping them into place. Trap the ends as you go, wrapping tape down the length of the stem at an angle. You could also use washi tape to add more color to the stem, but the masking tape works well to hold everything in place.

And that’s a pom-pom flower! Make them by the dozens in any color!
